Why Is My Apple Pencil Lagging? 5 Causes & Fixes

Why Is My Apple Pencil Lagging? The 5 Main Causes
Apple Pencil latency is measured in milliseconds. Apple claims 9ms latency on the standard Apple Pencil 2 and sub-9ms on the Apple Pencil Pro. Anything noticeably laggy to the human eye is in excess of ~20ms — meaning the hardware is working correctly but something software-side or hardware-side is introducing additional delay.

Is Your iPad in Low Power Mode?
Low Power Mode throttles the iPad's ProMotion display from 120Hz down to 60Hz or lower. Since ProMotion is what enables Apple Pencil's 120fps tracking, any reduction in display refresh rate directly increases perceived Pencil lag. Low Power Mode is enabled either manually or automatically when battery drops below 20%.
Fix: Settings → Battery → toggle off Low Power Mode. Screen brightness and performance return to normal, and Pencil latency drops immediately.
Is the Pencil Tip Worn or Damaged?
